Well, well, well! 
St Samson’s Well gets a makeover… 

 
Monday 28th July was St Samson’s Day, and a great opportunity to mark the recent restoration of St Samson’s Well.  History and tradition tells of this sacred site being the place where Samson, the student of St Illtud wept at the prospect of leaving his beloved home in Llantwit Major in the 6th Century, and his tears welled up into a source of healing water.
 
These days the traffic passes along the Old Wick Road almost oblivious to the ancient story, but former Mayor of Llantwit Major, Peter Dixon and his wife Sue, have raised funds for the well to be restored.  St Samson’s Day was celebrated with a re-telling of the story of the well by Philip Morris, Chair of the Local History Society, followed by a blessing of the well and the people it serves.
 

There are plans for a great celebration next year which, according to tradition, marks 1500 years since Samson was consecrated as a Bishop.  Put 28th July 2027 in your diary now!
